Silverfish: Species, Identification, Habitat & Diet
Species
Silverfish belong to order Zygentoma, with roughly 400 described species worldwide. Common household species include Lepisma saccharinum and Ctenolepisma longicaudata; species vary in size, color, and humidity preference.
Identification
Silvery, carrot-shaped, wingless insects (≈1–2 cm) with three tail-like cerci and a distinctive wriggling gait. Look for tiny scales, yellowing or holes in books/textiles, and small granular droppings (frass).
Habitat
They prefer dark, humid microclimates: basements, bathrooms, kitchens, attics, and behind skirting boards. Cardboard, stored paper, and cluttered closets provide ideal shelter and stable microhumidity for survival and breeding.
Diet
Silverfish eat starchy and proteinaceous materials: paper, book bindings, wallpaper paste, clothing fibers, cereals, and dried goods. Their ability to digest cellulose and starch makes archives, wardrobes, and pantries vulnerable.
Our Category
Silverfish are small, wingless insects known for their silvery scales and fast, wriggling movements. They thrive in dark, humid places and feed on starches such as paper, glue, fabric, and stored foods, often becoming a nuisance in homes.
