Silverfish: Species, Identification, Habitat & Diet

Species

Silverfish belong to order Zygentoma, with roughly 400 described species worldwide. Common household species include Lepisma saccharinum and Ctenolepisma longicaudata; species vary in size, color, and humidity preference.

Identification

Silvery, carrot-shaped, wingless insects (≈1–2 cm) with three tail-like cerci and a distinctive wriggling gait. Look for tiny scales, yellowing or holes in books/textiles, and small granular droppings (frass).

Habitat

They prefer dark, humid microclimates: basements, bathrooms, kitchens, attics, and behind skirting boards. Cardboard, stored paper, and cluttered closets provide ideal shelter and stable microhumidity for survival and breeding.

Diet

Silverfish eat starchy and proteinaceous materials: paper, book bindings, wallpaper paste, clothing fibers, cereals, and dried goods. Their ability to digest cellulose and starch makes archives, wardrobes, and pantries vulnerable.
